Service Description
Sick and tired of not knowing how to manage your cycle? Long waits for appointments? We now offer an oral contraceptive service to help you find the best choice for your body. Our specialist pharmacist will provide you with a confidential consultation to better understand your symptoms and cycle, and work together with you to find your more preferred choice of contraceptive pill. Eligibility: No prescription is required, and this service can be used by those who are restarting the contraceptive pill following a break, those who already use it regularly, or for anyone who is new to the contraceptive pill. What to expect: The pharmacist will take you into the confidential consultation space and ask you a few questions about your health. They may ask to take your weight, height and blood pressure readings to ensure that they are able to hep identify the most suitable type of contraceptive pill for your body. If they provide you will a pill, they will discuss with you how to take it, and any possible side effects you may have, and with your permission may notify your GP that you are now taking it. What Pill will I Get Given? The type of pill you are offered with depend on both your discussion with the pharmacist and your medical suitability. There are two types of pill which may be offered to you. 1. The combined contraceptive pill - This pill includes both progestogen and oestrogen and works to prevent pregnancy by slowing down or stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries each month. The pill can help with painful periods, acne or bloating, and after stopping it your fertility returns to previous levels within a month or two. It is important to note that this pill may not be suitable for everyone, including women who are currently breastfeeding. 2. The progestogen only pill - This pill does not contain oestrogen but works in a similar way to prevent pregnancy by slowing down or stopping the release of an egg from the ovaries each month. The pill can help to treat heavy and painful periods or endometriosis, and is safe for those who are currently breast-feeding. The pharmacist will help you decide with confidence which of these is the best option to suit your needs and will support you in managing your new medication.
