New Medicine Service
Helping you to understand your new medication
Service Description
If you have been prescribed a new medication for a long term health condition for the first time, we can provide a free service where the pharmacist will support you through the first few weeks go understand your medication, manage it and note down any possible effects with you, and speak to you about any questions, comments or concerns you may have. Eligibility: If you have been prescribed a new medication to help treat one of the following conditions, you are able to access this free NHS service: • asthma and COPD • diabetes (Type 2) • hypertension • hypercholesterolaemia • osteoporosis • gout • glaucoma • epilepsy • Parkinson’s disease • urinary incontinence/retention • heart failure • acute coronary syndromes • atrial fibrillation • long term risks of venous thromboembolism/embolism • stroke / transient ischemic attack • coronary heart disease Please note that there is a list of medications under these conditions and this list is set by NHS England rather than at the pharmacists discretion. This may mean that although you have a new medication, you may not be eligible for this free service. If this is the case, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. What to expect: Your appointment can be held in person, or over the telephone. The pharmacist will ask you some questions about your health and the new medication. They will help you understand how to take it, discuss any side effects and think about how best to follow up with you to see how you progress with your new medication. If you have any concerns about it, the pharmacist will be able to address these, and if necessary will notify your GP for a change in medication should this be the preferred outcome of your review. Please indicate on your booking form should you prefer a remote appointment.
Cancellation Policy
Please arrive 5 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to ensure enough time to complete any necessary forms before your appointment. If your appointment is online or via telephone, please ensure that we have the correct details to contact you. If you can no longer make your appointment, please cancel within 24 hours to avoid wasted sessions. Although many of our services are free, we do expect our customers to let us know when they can no longer make a slot. For services which require a deposit, please note that this is a non-refundable deposit but will be removed from the total amount remaining when you pay for the service in store or over the phone. Please also note that all services are subject to availability of medication from suppliers, and therefore we may upon occasion have to reschedule an appointment if the required medications are not in stock or available. Please note that ever endeavour will be made to avoid this as we are aware of the inconvenience this can cause. There may be times when our pharmacist may advise you a service is not suitable for you. Please note that this is due to clinical guidelines and is not at the pharmacist's discretion but will always be due to medical eligibility or NHS Criteria. Unfortunately, this criteria is not within our control and limitations for NHS funded services are subject to adherence to the eligibility set out by NHS England. All services will require you to complete a form upon arrival or prior to your appointment which will be stored securely in line with Information Governance guidelines. Please note that violence, aggression or threatening language towards our staff will not be tolerated. We are an NHS representative and are entitled to the same treatment as all other NHS staff and services. Abuse will not be tolerated.
